Catalogue Note: Levinea Campbell's sampler represents the earliest recorded example from the New Market, Virginia "Yellow House" group. Characteristics of this pictorial group include a central yellow house, picket fence with gate, tall trees, sawtooth banding, and a running vine border. Dates recorded on the known examples range from 1824 to 1845. Levinea's work and another almost identical specimen inscribed "Rockingham County Virginia" are the only ones not to indicate "New Market" within the lettering. It is thought that the "yellow house" samplers were worked by attendees of the New Market Female Seminary. Because of the school's location just north of the Rockingham County border, students included girls from both Shenandoah and Rockingham Counties.
